How Redirecting $39 Million Could Have Better Supported Military Families and Strengthened America’s Armed Forces

Honoring History and Supporting Military Members: Why Both Matter Today

"Renaming military bases: Are we erasing history or making it?"

This question has sparked passionate conversations among Americans, especially within the military community. As an Air Force veteran, I believe in preserving history—even the uncomfortable parts. History teaches us valuable lessons. But as we reflect, shouldn’t we focus on honoring history while supporting military members who are currently serving and sacrificing for our freedoms today?

Renaming military bases once named after Confederate generals has cost $39 million as of 2023. This figure excludes the additional expenses expected in 2024 and beyond for updated uniforms, signage, infrastructure, and other related costs. While some argue this change is overdue, others see the cost as a missed opportunity to focus on honoring history and supporting military members by addressing their pressing needs.

As a social enterprise, IGY6 Company directs some of its proceeds to support Military Families in Need, Single Service Members in Crisis, and Veterans battling visible and invisible wounds of war. We’re committed to making every decision reflect the values of service, authenticity, and impact.

How IGY6 Company Supports Military Members While Honoring History

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” His words remind us of the importance of intentionality—of focusing our energy and resources on honoring history and supporting military members through tangible actions that improve their lives.

While renaming bases may address symbolic injustices of the past, we must also ask ourselves:

  • Are we channeling our resources into efforts that genuinely support and uplift those serving today?

  • How are we meeting the pressing needs of military families, veterans, and active-duty personnel?

Dr. King’s legacy challenges us to focus on action that creates meaningful change.

The Importance of Supporting Military Members in Today’s Armed Forces

Here’s what $39 million as of 2023 could have achieved if redirected toward honoring history and supporting military members through impactful initiatives:

Improved Living Conditions for Junior Enlisted

Junior enlisted service members (E6 and below) make up 52% of America’s military, yet many live in outdated barracks that fail to reflect the dignity of their service. Upgrading these living quarters would improve quality of life, boost morale, and strengthen retention rates.

💡 Did you know? Starting April 1, 2025, E4s and below will receive a 10% pay bonus—a step forward, but not enough to address the urgent need for better housing【source】.

Addressed Food Insecurity in High-Cost Areas

Food insecurity remains a significant issue for military families, particularly in high-cost-of-living areas. A portion of the $39 million could have funded a pilot program to provide targeted support for service members struggling to make ends meet.

💡 Here’s the reality: A 2022 Feeding America report found that 24% of active-duty families experience food insecurity, underscoring the urgent need for solutions.

A conversation where an anonymous user asks if a family of four, with one spouse being an E3, would qualify for food stamps. Responses highlight food insecurity issues and resources like mobile food pantries and the Eglin Airman’s Attic for Active Duty E6 and below.
💡 This is why we do what we do. Military families should never have to struggle with food insecurity. Yet in 2025, a family of four with an E3 service member misses food assistance by just $100.

Reduced Out-of-Pocket PCS Costs

Relocating due to a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) often leaves military families with significant out-of-pocket expenses, especially when moving to high-cost urban areas. A pilot program could have offset these costs, reducing financial strain and easing transitions for military families.

💡 Fact: According to a 2023 RAND Corporation study, 31% of service members report financial strain directly related to PCS expenses.

Respecting History While Supporting Our Military

Dr. King’s vision was one of unity, love, and progress. While renaming bases may represent symbolic progress to some, we must also ask: Are we doing enough to channel this same energy into tangible actions that support those who stand ready to defend our nation?

Instead of erasing history, let’s focus on making it—by respecting our past and investing in our present. Supporting our military today isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s essential for a stronger, more resilient future.

A Call for Thoughtful Leadership

As professionals, leaders, and advocates, we have the power to direct resources where they matter most. Military families, veterans, and service members—how do you think we can balance honoring history and supporting military members with impactful use of resources like this $39 million?

Let’s start a thoughtful conversation about how we can better serve those who serve us. Share your insights and join the discussion.

Final Thoughts

Dr. King’s words remind us to approach each decision purposefully: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

At IGY6 Company, we believe in taking intentional, meaningful steps to support our military members today while learning from the lessons of our past.
